Understand our grading system

The trekking grading system of The Adventure Project takes into account several factors. These include; nature of the terrain, ascent and descent, the distance of the walk, the condition of the tracks and the availability of signage.

This helps our participants make a decision if the adventure is suitable for them, we offer advice and encouragement to everyone that joins our adventures.

Grade 1


Grade 1: Easy

No bushwalking experience required.  Predominantly flat walking tracks and paths with a few steps or undulating sections.

Distance no longer than 8km.

Grade 2

Easy to moderate

Grade 2: Easy to Moderate

No bushwalking experience required. The track is hardened or compacted surface and may have some short hill sections and some steps.

Distance up to 12km.

Grade 3


Grade 3: Moderate

Suitable for most ages and fitness levels. Some bushwalking experience recommended but not essential. Tracks likely to have short steep hill sections and include steps and the track surface will be rough and uneven.

Distance up to 16km.

Grade 4

Moderate to hard

Grade 4: Moderate to hard

Bushwalking experience recommended. Tracks may be long, rough and very steep. Directional signage may be limited.

Distance up to 20km.

Grade 5


Grade 5: Hard

Very experienced bushwalkers with specialised skills, including navigation and emergency first aid. Tracks are likely to be very rough, very steep and unmarked.

Distance may be more than 20km.
